The Program on Constitutionalism and Democracy at the University of Virginia: Postdoctoral Research Associate and Lecturer
The Program on Constitutionalism and Democracy (PCD) in the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia, a JMC partner program, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate and lecture position. PCD’s mission is to promote scholarship and undergraduate teaching that is informed by political theory and that focuses on the American political tradition. PCD is directed by JMC board member James W. Ceaser and JMC fellow Rita Koganzon.
Postdoctoral Research Associates will conduct their own research, participate in PCD programming, and teach one undergraduate course per semester, either “The American Political Tradition” (PLAP 2250) or “American Political Economy” (PLAP 3500). These courses require as background a concentration in political theory and/or an approach to American politics focusing on American political thought and American political development. The opportunity to teach an advanced seminar on a specialized topic may also be available.
Applicants must complete all requirements for their PhD, including a successful defense, prior to start date.
The initial appointment is for 1 year; however, the appointment may be renewed for an additional year contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. The position is available starting from January 2021 or August 2021.

About the program:
The Program on Constitutionalism and Democracy at the University of Virginia, a JMC partner program, promotes scholarship and undergraduate teaching that are informed by political theory and by the political science of the American Founding. Since its founding in 2006 by Professor of Politics James W. Ceaser, PCD has sought to revive the spirit and intent of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison’s “Rockfish Gap Report” (1818), which recommends a curriculum of political studies for higher education that is designed to foster an enlightened body of citizens for a liberal democracy. The program regularly offers two undergraduate courses, open to all students in the University: “American Political Tradition,” and “American Political Economy.” Approximately 900-1000 students have enrolled in the program’s landmark “American Political Tradition” course since it was first offered in 2006, and “American Political Economy” was added in 2014. Emphasis is placed on the close reading and discussion of important texts and documents.
