Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Associate Director of the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), a tenured faculty member in the School who will provide senior administrative leadership based on extensive and successful experience.

Contributing to that no. 1 ranking is the new School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership, which aims to create a new kind of leader by blending tradition and innovation, and blending liberal arts and civic education. SCETL plays a leading role in the intellectual and civic life of ASU and the various communities that it serves.
The School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL), entering its sixth year, is a growing academic and civic enterprise with an undergraduate major and minor, undergraduate PPE certificate, an M.A. degree in Classical Liberal Education and Leadership, an ambitious speakers program – the Civic Discourse Project – and two Centers for research and public outreach. The Center for Political Thought and Leadership (CPTL) focuses on civic education, especially American political and constitutional thought, for a broad public and for higher education and particularly for K-12 schools. The Center for the Study of Economic Liberty pursues national and international research on economic thought, debates about markets, and policies affecting economic liberty.
The Associate Director of the School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL) will be a tenured faculty member in the School, holding significant administrative leadership roles along with teaching and research expectations. The Associate Director will support the Director with internal leadership and administration of the School in its complex array of missions, and with selected external relations and duties; including the Director’s efforts on strategic planning, internal governance with SCETL’s faculty advisory committee, and special committee assignments; and coordination with the Center directors, SCETL faculty leaders, and SCETL senior staff. The Associate Director also will support development efforts and coordinate with SCETL’s Board of Counselors, a distinguished group of political and civic leaders.
In addition to the specific duties associated with the above description, the SCETL Associate Director will be expected to meet the normal requirements of a regular faculty member at ASU: to have an active, productive, and nationally recognized research agenda in accordance with ASU’s status as an R1 research institution, and to engage in regular teaching (with a reduced course load given administrative duties). Further, the Associate Director will be a crucial leader in the continued development of the undergraduate and graduate curricula and programs, faculty hiring, retention and promotion, and development of broader aspects of the School’s blended educational and civic mission.
Qualifications:
Applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. by time of appointment in Political Science, Philosophy, History, American Studies, or a related field. Applicants must also possess a record of research activity sufficient for tenure at an R1 research university, with some focus on American political thought, leadership, and civic education.
