On this day in 1777, the British under General John Burgoyne surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga. The American victory was a turning point in the Revolution and helped convince foreign governments to ally themselves with the fight for American independence.
Did you know? Famous traitor Benedict Arnold played a major part in the American victory, severely wounding his leg in the process. Though Arnold isn’t formally recognized at Saratoga National Historic Park, the park contains an unnamed statue of a boot to recognize his heroic actions.
