2018 Hertog Fellowships and Seminars

The Hertog Foundation is now accepting applications for weekend seminars and summer fellowships for 2018.

 

Weekend Seminars

 

Hertog Weekend Seminars provide top undergraduates with the rare opportunity to engage in high-level intellectual discussion and debate on the most influential works in political thought and the most pressing policy issues facing the United States with renowned scholars, leading experts, and a community of peers from across the country.

Not a lecture or a conference, each seminar is centered around in-depth, student-driven dialogue on a set of curated readings. Seminars typically begin on a Friday evening and conclude Sunday afternoon. In addition to providing course materials, the Hertog Foundation covers all meals and travel and lodging costs.

Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent grads (2017 or 2018)

Location: Washington, DC

Duration: Friday-Sunday seminars, Winter/Spring 2018

Stipend: Covers housing, meals, and travel

Application Deadline: January 15, 2018

Intensive weekend programs that allow students to dive into pressing policy issues with leading experts and thinkers. Topics include understanding populism and constitutional law.

Summer Fellowships

 

Political Studies Program

If you could study with some of the world’s top thinkers on some of the world’s most important topics – war and grand strategy, economic policy, or political thought and philosophy – which would you choose?

Each year, the Hertog Foundation brings together top college students to the nation’s capital to explore the theory and practice of politics in an intensive seminar setting with outstanding faculty.

This summer’s offerings provide students the flexibility to create their ideal summer experience – by applying for a seven-week summer fellowship or choosing among one to two week seminars to create their own individualized course of study. Check back soon for more Summer 2018 course offerings!

Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent grads (2017 or 2018)

Location: Washington, DC

Duration: 7-week program, June 17 – August 4, 2018

Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

Application Deadline: February 12, 2018 (Early decision: January 15)

Hertog Fellows study classic texts in political thought and some of the seminal documents of American politics with an outstanding faculty. In addition, students study selected public policy issues with some of those who helped formulate and implement those policies.

War Studies Program

The Hertog War Studies Program is an intensive two-week program run by the Institute for the Study of War in Washington DC. The program aims to educate advanced undergraduate students about the theory, practice, organization, and control of war and military forces. Over the course of two weeks, students will learn from and interact with distinguished senior leaders in the national security and military communities. Students will gain a deeper understanding of specific topics in military history and their intersection with modern warfare and policy. Opportunities to learn about military history in a hands-on environment include participating in a battlefield staff-ride to Gettysburg to explore the relationships between terrain, timing, and decision-making in war. Previous editions of the Hertog War Studies Program have featured topics including the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the ongoing threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham in Syria and Iraq.

Eligibility: College juniors, seniors and very recent grads (2017)

Duration: 2-week program, July 20 – August 4, 2018

Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

Application Deadline: February 12, 2018 (Early decision: January 15)

Summer Courses

Students seeking a more specialized experience can apply to the courses within the Political Studies Program that best fit their interests and knowledge level. This option is also ideal for students who have other jobs, internships, or commitments during the summer. Up to 110 undergraduates and recent grads (2017 and 2018) will be selected to participate.

Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent grads (2017 or 2018)

Location: Washington, DC

Duration: One- to two-week seminars throughout the period of June 24 – August 4, 2018

Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

Application Deadline: February 12, 2018 (Early decision: January 15)

This series of one- to two-week seminars allows students to create their own individualized course of study. Younger students are encouraged to apply for these seminars, as are upperclassmen who have other obligations during the summer. Offerings include topics such as American democratic capitalism, US-Russia policy, modern conservative thought, and grand strategy.
