FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Philadelphia, PA – The Flag and General Officers’ Network and the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History proudly announce our strategic partnership. Our two like-minded organizations recognize shared goals that were actually enshrined during America’s Founding.
“Civic education is a national security issue, and it is particularly significant that The Flag and General Officers’ Network would decide to focus on civics at this critical moment for our country,” said Hans Zeiger, president of the Jack Miller Center. “As we look ahead to America’s 250th birthday, the 1,100 scholars in the Jack Miller Center’s academic network and the 2,000 retired senior officers in The Flag and General Officers’ Network share a common commitment to the extraordinary importance of civic education for our nation.”
“The Flag and General Officers’ Network has a long-standing goal of providing opportunities for our members to serve through civic engagement. Our new partnership with the Jack Miller Center provides another avenue for our generals and admirals to offer their wealth of experience and unique perspective in this worthy area,” said Lew Roach, president of The Flag and General Officers’ Network.
The nation’s first general officer, George Washington, believed that humanity’s highest ideals, captured in our Founding principles, were worth fighting and dying for. Today’s generals and admirals continue to model themselves after General Washington. He would go on to also become the nation’s first president. In his final address to the Congress, President Washington understood that the republic’s survival not only depended on a strong military but also strong civics knowledge:
The more homogenous our citizens can be made in these particulars, the greater will be our prospect of permanent union; and a primary object of such a national institution should be the education of our youth in the science of Government. In a Republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important and what duty more pressing on its Legislature, than to patronize a plan for communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?
Dedicated to reinvigorating education in America’s founding principles and history, the Jack Miller Center puts the spirit behind President Washington’s final address into action, providing their civics programs to all “future guardians of the liberties of the country.” Like the nation’s first general, The Flag and General Officers’ Network’s 2,000 members support and defend the nation and now join forces with the JMC’s civics education activities to ensure the “prospect of permanent union.”
“Nothing is more important than passing our Founding’s principles and history to the next generation,” said Michael Weiser, chairman of the Jack Miller Center. “Whether that means civics education at the K-12 and university levels or engaging the young men and women of America’s fighting force in conversations about the civic principles they defend, JMC will work with any organization that shares our commitment to America’s principles and history.”
There are even greater opportunities: look for future announcements as the Jack Miller Center and The Flag and General Officers’ Network prepares to celebrate our nation’s historic 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026!
