Virtual Teacher Institute with American University: American Principles and Debates
The Political Theory Institute at American University, with the support of the Jack Miller Center, is hosting a week-long virtual institute for social studies teachers.
This institute will explore the key principles and debates of the American republic from its founding until today through the careful study of primary source documents. Participants will read and discuss key texts, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Federalist Papers, as well as key speeches and writings from the United States’ most thoughtful leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Sessions will be led by Professor Alan Levine of American University and by visiting faculty. JMC Teacher Education Fellow Danton Kostandarithes will lead a classroom application session at the end of the institute on incorporating primary sources into K-12 teaching.
Participants will earn 20 professional development hours and will receive a $300 stipend. The deadline to apply is April 28.
