Lee University Summer Seminar: Grit & American Character
Through a mixed cohort of undergraduates and regional high-school students, this day-long seminar will use the lens of American fiction to consider the formal and informal institutions that shape our societal mores and vision of American Identity. Students will read and discuss the American novel, True Grit. This classic American Western considers the nature of the American spirit – its resilience, its passion, and its ingenuity – through the story of 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who is on a quest to avenge the death of her father. The tale also speaks to the limits of law and the need for social trust which can only be gained through the bonds of shared sacrifice.
