Hillsdale College: Full-Time Faculty Positions in the Van Andel School of Government

Hillsdale College invites applications for two full-time faculty positions to teach in its Van Andel Graduate School of Government, at its Washington D.C. campus, beginning August 2022.

The college seeks candidates who can teach in a liberal arts-informed government program and who possess an ability and enthusiasm to teach and mentor both graduate students who are working professionals in public affairs attending the degree program as well as undergraduates on a semester program.

The successful candidate may hold a terminal degree in a variety of fields, for instance History, Government, or Literature. Program faculty teach weekly evening courses on an extended trimester schedule, with an occasional one-credit course on weekends. Research and writing in a political vein is a desirable attribute, and a successful candidate would participate in Hillsdale College programming at its Washington D.C. campus.

Hillsdale College is a fiercely independent Christian college of liberal arts, committed to the Western tradition and dedicated to excellence in teaching. Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the particular curriculum of the School of Government (https://dc.hillsdale.edu/School-of-Government/Curriculum/), with the College’s mission statement (https://www.hillsdale.edu/about/mission/), and with the College’s founding documents and resolutions (https://www.hillsdale.edu/about/history/founding-documents/). Additional information about the College’s Washington D.C. campus can be found at (https://dc.hillsdale.edu/).

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have some combination of the following core teaching areas, the relative emphasis to be determined by the combination of the two positions in meeting the department’s needs:

  1. political thought and literature in the liberal arts tradition;
  2. political institutions, especially Congress as well as constitutional law and the judiciary);
  3. and American politics and history through the Civil War.

In both cases, rank will be determined by the level of experience and the record of the successful candidate.
