|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 1 of October, repeating indefinitely

On October 1, 1890, Yosemite National Park was established in California. The park sits in Yosemite Valley, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is home to one of the world’s largest waterfalls (!)

The park’s beauty has served as inspiration to such figures as John Muir (who fought for the land’s protection) and Ansel Adams (whose black-and-white photos have immortalized its
landscapes).

Did you know? The word “Yosemite” means “those who kill” in the Miwok language. The park gets its name from the Yosemite people of the region, historical enemies of the Miwok.
