Yellowstone National Park established in 1872

March 1, 2025

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 1 of March, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1872, Yellowstone National Park was established as President Ulysses S. Grant signed an act protecting over 2 million acres of wilderness as “a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” It was the first national park in America.

Did you know? Yellowstone contains roughly 75% of the world’s geysers and sits on top of the largest supervolcano in the United States. Though considered active, the volcano has not erupted in 640,000 years. The park is also home to the most remote location in the lower 48 states, Thorofare, which is 32 miles away from any road, residence, or establishment.
