Xavier University “Constitution Day Colloquium” with Dr. Melissa Matthes & Xavier Faculty , September 16th and 17th

CONSTITUTION DAY COLLOQUIUM
To commemorate the 233rd anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution, Xavier University is hosting a two-day Constitution Day Colloquium. The event, which takes place on Sept. 17 and 18, 2021, brings students and faculty together to engage in detailed readings and discussion on the Founders’ ideas and their relevance to the challenges facing our nation today. The Colloquium, which is funded by a grant from the Jack Miller Center, is being offered as part of Xavier’s Take It On initiative, a bipartisan, values-centered effort to proactively promote Ignatian civic engagement, including better civic discourse and robust, peaceful engagement in politics. Additional support comes from The Smith Scholars Program and the Philosophy, Politics & the Public Honors Program.
The two-day program opens with a public address by R.B. Bernstein (City University of New York), author of The Education of John Adams, on “How John Adams became a Founding Father.” This talk is free and open to the public on Friday, Sept. 17 at 2:00 in the Conaton Board Room. Twenty Xavier students who have been named Constitution Day Scholars will continue the conversation at a dinner on Friday evening and a full day of panels and discussion on Saturday. Steven Frankel, Ph.D., from Xavier’s Smith Scholars program will speak on “Why We Study the Founding” on Friday evening. Faculty from the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning, History, Political Science, and the Philosophy, Politics and the Public Honors Program will serve as facilitators for the Saturday panels.

Join Dr. Melissa Matthes from the US Coast Guard Academy for the Constitution Day Address on the role of religion in public life and how religious identity and beliefs shape political agendas and political outcomes.
Constitution Day Colloquium: The Constitution, Courts, and the Tensions between Liberty and Democracy
Saturday, September 17, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm Clocktower Lounge (GSC)
Join Xavier’s Dr. Matthew Williamson, Ivy Banks, Tim Brownlee, Kate Lawson, Sean Rhiney, and the 2022 Constitution Day Fellows for a lunchtime discussion on John Jay, the Founders, and the role of the Courts in the US constitutional system.
