An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 6 of December, repeating indefinitely

On December 6, 1907, the worst mining accident in U.S. history occurred at the Monongah Mine in West Virginia. An explosion in the mines killed 350+ coal miners. With a lack of regulation and poorly followed safety guidelines, mining deaths were tragically common in the United States in the 1800s and early 1900s.

Did you know? Many coal miners at the turn of the century were recent immigrants and Black Americans. The great dangers of mining served as an impetus for the organized labor movement.
