January 16, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 16 of January, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1786, Virginia enacted the Statute for Religious Freedom. The statute disestablished the Church of England as Virginia’s official state-supported religion and implemented freedom of worship.

Authored by Thomas Jefferson, the statute was an important precursor to the protection of religious liberty and separation of church and state later codified in the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Did you know? Thomas Jefferson saw the Statute as one of the most important accomplishments of his life and asked that it be listed on his tombstone.
