On June 25, 1788, Virginia entered the Union as our tenth state. As home to the oldest English settlement in America (Jamestown) as well as several magnanimous founding fathers, Virginia may be counted as one of our most historic states. ๐บ๐ธ๐โฒ๏ธ
Eight U.S. presidents have hailed from Virginia, including four of the first five: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe (northerner John Adams must have felt a bit out of place!) No other state has produced so many presidents.
Did you know? Thanks to the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia is the largest seafood producer on the East Coast. A large part of the industry is oysters, which grow in eight different regions (each of which have their own distinct flavor). ๐ฆช๐ฆช๐ฆช
Whatโs in a name? Virginia is named after Queen Elizabeth I, widely known as โthe Virgin Queen.โ It is thought that Sir Walter Raleigh suggested the name as early as 1584.
