May 2, 2026

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day first of May, repeating indefinitely

Today marks the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby! The Derby dates to 1875 and of the three races in the Triple Crown, it is the first and the most popular, attracting millions of viewers every year.

Over the years, the race has collected a variety of traditions, including mint juleps, enormous rose garlands, and fancy hats for lady spectators.

Only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown, the latest being Justify in 2018.

Did you know? The founder of the Derby, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., was the grandson of William Clark (yes, the William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition).
