On this day – Texas becomes our 28th state
|Recurring Event (See all)
An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 29 of December, repeating indefinitely
On December 29, 1845, Texas entered the Union as our 28th state. It is the largest state in the continental U.S. and the second largest state by population in the country.
Reflecting its huge size, the state contains the largest ranch in the nation, King Ranch, which is bigger than the state of Rhode Island!
Did you know? Texas was its own nation, the Republic of Texas, for nearly a decade before joining the United States.
What’s in a name? Texas comes from a Native American word for “friends” or “allies.”
