On this day – Tennessee became our 16th state

June 1, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 1 of June, repeating indefinitely

On June 1, 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the Union as our 16th state. The state is home to the Country Music Capital of the World (Nashville), as well as the second most visited home in the United States: Elvis’ Graceland (numbers vary each year, but typically only the White House is visited more).

Did you know? Tennessee was the first Confederate state to rejoin the Union after the Civil War.

What’s in a name? Tennessee’s name origin is uncertain, but it’s believed that it was derived from the Native American village, Tanasse.
