An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 15 of February, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1820, American activist Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts. An icon of the women’s suffrage movement, Anthony founded the National American Woman Suffrage Association with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and helped pave the way for the Nineteenth Amendment. Aside from her activism for women’s rights, Anthony was also a vocal abolitionist and proponent of the temperance movement.

Did you know? Anthony was arrested for illegally voting in the 1872 elections and fined $100, which she never paid.

She was a big fan of bicycles, noting that “I think [bicycling] has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammeled womanhood.”
