Pearl S. Buck

On June 26, 1892, American author Pearl S. Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia. She spent much of her life in China and her fiction often focused on Chinese families wrestling with love, adversity, and loss. Did you know? Buck was passionate about equal rights for women and minorities. She spoke out against Japanese Americans’ internment during World War II and testified in Congress to overturn discriminatory Chinese exclusion laws. She also had a special concern for children and co-founded the first international, inter-racial adoption agency.
