July 26, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 26 of July, repeating indefinitely

On July 26, 1788, New York ratified the Constitution, making it our 11th state. It contains the nation’s most populous city (New York City) which once served as our nation’s capital (Washington was sworn in there in 1789). It has also produced the most vice presidents.

Did you know? Buffalo wings, beloved both nationally and internationally, were created in Buffalo, New York during the 1960s. Before their invention, wings were a cheap cut of meat and considered undesirable. Today, spicy buffalo wings are a favorite appetizer often served with blue cheese dip.

What’s in a name? One of the few state names without Native American origins, New York is derived from the British title, Duke of York, which is traditionally given to the second-born son of British monarchs. At the time, it wasn’t uncommon to combine the titles of “Duke of York” and “Duke of Albany” – New York’s capital of Albany is derived from this title.
