On this day – Michigan became our 26th state

January 26, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 26 of January, repeating indefinitely

On January 26, 1837, Michigan was admitted to the Union as our 26th state. The state has the most coastline on the Great Lakes and is bordered by Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie. The state (and more specifically, its largest city, Detroit) are well known as the capital of the American auto industry – Detroit’s moniker is Motor City.

Did you know? Michigan residents utilize the state’s mittenlike shape as a guide while pointing to places around the Lower Peninsula. Want to look like a real Michigander? Hold up your right palm, form a mitten shape, and point to where you’re going.

What’s in a name? Michigan is believed to come from the Algonquin word for “big lake.”
