On this day – Mesa Verde National Park Established

June 29, 2022

On June 29, 1906, Mesa Verde National Park was established in southwestern Colorado to protect a large grouping of ancient cliff dwellings. The dwellings, built by the Ancestral Pueblo, are estimated to be over 700 years old!

Aside from being a national park, Mesa Verde is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best-preserved examples of prehistoric cliff-dwellings in the American Southwest.

Did you know? The park is also an astronomical destination. A certified International Dark Sky Park, Mesa Verde offers a stunning view of the night sky with nearly zero light pollution. 🌌✨🌔🔭

“Mesa Verde,” Spanish for “green table,” refers to the park’s location on the side of a large plateau. 💚💚💚
