February 6, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 6 of February, repeating indefinitely

On February 6, 1788, Massachusetts ratified the Constitution, establishing itself as our 6th state. The state has deep revolutionary roots – Boston was a hotbed of patriot activity leading up to the Revolution and the first battles of the war (those at Lexington and Concord) took place in Massachusetts.

Did you know? Massachusetts’ state constitution is the oldest continuously functioning constitution in the world. Drafted by John Adams and adopted in 1780, it was a used as a reference for the U.S. Constitution.

What’s in a name? Massachusetts comes from an Algonquin word for “great hill small place” which may have referred to the bay in Boston and the surrounding hills.
