|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 9 of July, repeating indefinitely

On July 9, 1819, Elias Howe Jr., the inventor of the modern sewing machine, was born in Spencer, Massachusetts. His patent for the first lockstitch sewing machine contributed much to mass clothing production. 🧡πŸͺ‘πŸ‘”πŸ‘š

Though machine production did not prove profitable for Howe, he became wealthy as other companies utilized his technology, collecting royalties and settlements for copyright infringement.

Howe was a supporter of Union war efforts during the Civil War – aside from enlisting, he donated some of his wealth to supporting his regiment.

Did you know? The Beatles’ 1965 musical film, Help!, was β€œrespectfully dedicated to the memory of Mr. Elias Howe, who, in 1846, invented the sewing machine.” πŸŽΈπŸ§‘πŸ§‘πŸ§‘πŸ§‘πŸŽ¬
