On this day – Indiana became our 19th State

December 11, 2023

On December 11, 1816, Indiana was admitted to the Union as our 19th state.

Did you know? Abraham Lincoln may have represented Illinois and been born in Kentucky, but he spent much of his childhood on the Indiana frontier. It was here that Lincoln lost his mother as a young boy, but also where he gained a loving and encouraging stepmother that bolstered his ever-increasing love for reading and education.

What’s in a name? “Indiana” derives from the word “Indian”, a refers to the Native Americans that settlers encountered as they pushed westward. The state nickname, “Hoosier”, however, is much harder to pinpoint in origin.
