An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 27 of May, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1937, Americans celebrated the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. The iconic structure spans nearly two miles and was the longest suspension bridge in the world up until 1964.

A long time coming, the bridge was originally proposed in the 1870s with construction not occurring until the 1930s. For many art-lovers, this was a blessing in disguise as final plans adopted a striking Art Deco style.

Did you know? The Golden Gate Bridge could have been black, gray, aluminum, or black with yellow stripes. All of these colors were considered before architects settled on International Orange, inspired by the original red primer on the steel beams. 🧡🧡🧡 The unique color complements that of the surrounding hills and has the benefit of good visibility in oft-foggy weather. 🌁 🌁 🌁

Though present visitors can’t imagine San Francisco without the Golden Gate Bridge, several at the time opposed its construction. Both famed photographer Ansel Adams and the Sierra Club feared that the bridge would mar the bay area’s natural beauty.
