Boyce was inspired by the Boy Scouts movement in England after reportedly meeting a scout while lost in the streets of London. After guiding Boyce to his destination, the Boy Scout refused compensation for his good deed, impressing the American.
Early scouting appealed to boys with an emphasis on outdoor survival, navigation, first aid skills, and good deeds.
