An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 27 of August, repeating indefinitely
On this day in 1908, 36th president Lyndon Baines Johnson was born near Stonewall, Texas. The successor to John F. Kennedy, President Johnson faced American involvement in the Vietnam War (and its decrease in popularity), implemented Great Society and Medicare programming, and signed new civil rights legislation into law.
Did you know? Before launching a political career, Johnson was a teacher in small-town Texas near the Mexican border. He didn’t speak Spanish, and many of his students didn’t speak English. Undeterred, Johnson organized speech and debate activities to strengthen his students’ language skills. He also sympathized with his poorer students, spending his first paycheck on playground equipment.
