On this day in 1897, American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas. She’s credited with many records and notable accomplishments, including being the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first woman to make a transatlantic flight, though she didn’t see it as a major accomplishment. Looking to the future, she said “Stultz [the pilot] did all the flying—had to. I was just baggage, like a sack of potatoes…Maybe someday I’ll try it alone.”

Tragically, Earhart went missing and was never found on an attempted round-the-world flight in 1937. She’s still remembered for her determination, bravery, and spirited independence.

Did you know? Earhart’s interest in flying was piqued at a Toronto flying exposition. One stunt pilot dived closely over the heads of Earhart and a friend, but she held her ground, demonstrating more curiosity than fear from the experience.

Earhart didn’t like coffee or tea – on long flights, she’d use smelling salts instead of caffeine to stay awake.

Earhart didn’t let anyone put her in a box, proving that traditionally feminine pursuits were not incompatible with adventure. She was an accomplished seamstress and designed her own fashion line, which was both stylish and practical.
