An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 26 of October, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1881, the shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona occurred as law enforcement consisting of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday faced down the outlaw gang, “the Cowboys.” The two groups had been vying for control of the Tombstone area when tensions finally broke, leaving three outlaws dead within 30 seconds.

Though brief, it is one of the most famous shootouts in the history of the American “Wild” West.

Did you know? The short gunfight wasn’t famous in its time but gained notoriety when a fictionalized biography of Wyatt Earp’s life was published years later. From there, Earp’s life was dramatized on the silver screen, bringing more fame to the events in Tombstone.

The gunfight didn’t actually take place in the O.K. Corral, but down the street in a vacant lot.
