An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 18 of September, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1870, the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park was observed by the Washburn-Doane-Langford expedition and received its name. The geyser particularly stood out for its regular timing – the men noted that these eruptions of boiling hot water lasted for roughly 15-20 minutes.

Did you know? Despite their awe for Old Faithful, travelers didn’t hesitate to use it as a natural washing machine:

“Old Faithful is sometimes degraded by being made a laundry. Garments placed in the crater during quiescence are ejected and thoroughly washed when the eruption takes place. Gen. Sheridan’s men, in 1882, found that linen and cotton fabrics were uninjured by the action of the water, but woolen clothes were torn to shreds.” – The Yellowstone National Park Manual, 1883. 💨👕💨🥼💨👖
