An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 16 of July, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1862, civil rights and women’s rights activist Ida B. Wells was born in Holly Springs, Missouri. An investigative journalist, she reported on and exposed the violence of lynchings in the South and spoke out against segregation. During this time, Wells received threats to her life and work but did not waver in her efforts.

Did you know? From a young age, Wells had to stand firm. Her parents were active in politics and education but tragically died from yellow fever when Wells was only a teenager. The eldest child, Wells worked hard to provide for her siblings and successfully kept the family together.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary Garrity, c. 1893
