On this day in 1860, First Lady Ellen Wilson born in Savannah, Georgia

May 15

On May 15, 1860, First Lady Ellen Wilson was born in Savannah, Georgia. First Lady to Woodrow Wilson, she took a particular interest in art and children’s issues. Before marrying, she attended the prestigious Art Students League.

Did you know? Wilson directed the addition of the famous Rose Garden to the White House grounds. Since then, it has been commonly used for public receptions and presidential events, as well as the personal enjoyment of many first families (presidential daughter Tricia Nixon was married there in 1971).
