An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 15 of September, repeating indefinitely
On this day in 1857, 27th president William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His presidency was marked by the rise of progressivism in both the Democratic and Republican parties. Though he did not go far enough for many progressives, Taft’s administration initiated 80 antitrust suits. More “trust-busting” occurred under Taft than it did under Theodore Roosevelt, the “Great Trust-Buster.”
Taft has the distinction of being the only president to serve in the highest positions of both the executive and judicial branches. After his presidency, he was nominated as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Warren Harding.
Did you know? Taft much preferred the practice of law to hold public office and as Chief Justice once remarked, “I don’t remember that I ever was president.”
