An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 29 of January, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1843, 25th President William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio. His presidency was notable for an increase in protective tariffs and imperialist policies that led to the annexation of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Tragically, McKinley was the third president assassinated – an anarchist shot him at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901.

Did you know? McKinley had a good luck charm – early in his political career, an opponent gave him a red carnation to wear prior to a debate. When McKinley came out on top, going on to win the congressional election, he began wearing the carnation during all his election cycles and presidency.

He was also known to give away his lucky lapel carnations as a sign of goodwill – while greeting the public minutes before his assassination, the president gave his last carnation to a little girl, saying “I must give this flower to another little flower.”

He was the last of seven presidents to have served in the Civil War.
