An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 30 of November, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1835, American author Mark Twain (né Samuel Clemens) was born in Florida, Missouri. Popular for his colorful and humorous style, Twain nonetheless tackled serious issues in American society, such as slavery and race, morality, and human nature. His most famous book may be The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which portrays slavery and Mississippi River life through the eyes of a young boy.

Did you know? Mark Twain was born shortly after Halley’s Comet made an appearance, passing by the Earth. The comet, which appears every 75 or 76 years, next came in 1910, days from Twain’s death.

Twain had predicted his death a year prior, quipping “I came in with Halley’s Comet… It is coming again next year. The Almighty has said, no doubt, ‘Now there are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.’”
