An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 19 of November, repeating indefinitely
On this day in 1831, 20th president James A. Garfield was born in Orange, Ohio. Though he served in the House of Representatives for nearly two decades, his presidency was brief, cut short by assassination after 200 days.
Did you know? Garfield wore many hats throughout his life, in turn serving as a canal boatman, a classics professor, minister, and Civil War general before he was elected to Congress in 1862.
Though he never campaigned for Congress, his popularity in Ohio pulled him from the battlefield to the national political stage.
His nomination for the presidency came about in much the same way – Garfield attended the 1880 Republican convention to stump for another politician but was instead chosen himself.
