|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 5 of October, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1830, 21st president Chester A. Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont. An oft-overlooked president, his term was distinguished by reduced tariffs and civil service reform (something Arthur initially showed skepticism towards).

A year into his presidency, Arthur became aware that he was suffering from fatal kidney disease. The disease was kept secret and Arthur stepped out of the party line time and time again, perhaps unafraid of political consequences during his limited time.

Did you know? Arthur led a project to refurbish the White House, which had grown shabby. Seeking the best of the best, he hired Louis Comfort Tiffany to redecorate and refurnish the Executive Mansion.

Because his wife had died right before his presidency, he had no official First Lady but had fresh flowers laid at her portrait every day. 💐💐💐
