An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 4 of October, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1822, 19th president Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio. The Hayes presidency was marked by the 1876 election (one of the most controversial in U.S. history), the end of Reconstruction, and a return to the gold standard.

Before his presidency, much of Reconstruction had already ended and Republicans had lost most control over the South. Under Hayes, the final federal troops were removed from South Carolina and Louisiana. The event signified unopposed African-American disenfranchisement throughout the South for years to come.

Did you know? Though many U.S. presidents had served as lawyers, Hayes was the first to graduate from law school. First Lady Lucy Webb was also unusually well-educated, the first First Lady to be a college graduate.
On a light note, Hayes was also the first president to hold an Easter egg roll on the White House lawn, a tradition still enjoyed today.🐣🍬🐣🍬🐣🍬
