|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 10 of November, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1775, the U.S. Marine Corps was created as the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to form two battalions of Continental Marines to augment naval operations. The Marines made their first amphibious raid a few months later, successfully seizing British gunpowder and munitions at Fort Nassau in the Bahamas.

Did you know? Tun Tavern in Philadelphia served as the recruiting headquarters for the first Marines. Though no longer standing, the tavern is still traditionally considered the birthplace of the Marines. At the close of the Revolutionary War, the Marines were dissolved and not re-established until 1798.

Fewer than 100 civilians have been made Honorary Marines in the organization’s 246-year history. Those who have include Joe Rosenthal (the reporter who took the photograph “Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima”) and actors Chuck Norris and Gary Sinise.
