|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 13 of October, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1754, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley (an inspiration for legendary Revolutionary War hero Molly Pitcher) was born near Trenton, New Jersey. Like many soldiers’ wives during the Revolution, McCauley followed her husband’s troop and performed mundane (but crucial) tasks like washing clothes and hauling water.

Did you know? There is no definitive historical proof that McCauley was Molly Pitcher, a symbolic figure who took up artillery after her husband was killed, but she is most often credited to be the legendary figure.

Molly Pitcher was also likely inspired by Margaret Corbin and countless other unnamed women who contributed to the war effort. Through the story of Molly Pitcher, we still commemorate their sacrifices today. 🇺🇸👩‍🦰🇺🇸👩🇺🇸👱‍♀️
