On this day in 1741, Patriot hero turned traitor Benedict Arnold was born in Norwich, Connecticut. During the early years of the American Revolution, he was hailed as a brilliant tactician for his actions to fend off the British invasion of Canada.

After being passed over several times for promotion and clashing with senior officers, Arnold’s loyalties changed and he began aiding the British. His treason was discovered upon the capture of a British spy with incriminating papers. Arnold fled, living out his final days in England.

Did you know? Arnold stood up George Washington for a breakfast date. The men were scheduled to have breakfast together the same day the treason was discovered. Mere hours before Washington arrived at his home, Arnold received a letter that his British contact had been captured. Aware of what was to come, he immediately fled. Washington was disgusted.
