An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 13 of November, repeating indefinitely

On this day in 1732, founding father John Dickinson was born in Talbot County, Maryland. With Thomas Jefferson, he co-wrote the Declaration of the Causes and Necessities of Taking Up Arms. He also served as governor of Pennsylvania and an attendee of both the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention.

Did you know? Though he played a prominent role in the new government of the United States, Dickinson earlier refrained from signing or voting on the Declaration of Independence as he was initially opposed to a separation from Great Britain.

Though a lesser-known founder, Dickinson made an impact on his more famous peers. John Adams described him as “a very modest man, and very ingenious as well as agreeable…[He] is but a shadow. Tall, slender as a reed, pale as ashes. One would think at first sight he could not live a month. Yet upon more attentive inspection he looks as if the springs of life were strong enough to last many years.”

John Dickinson, Charles Willson Peale, 1780
