On this day – Hawaii became our 50th State

August 21, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 21 of August, repeating indefinitely

On August 21, 1959, Hawaii was admitted to the Union as our 50th (and most recent) state. It is the only state outside of North America and the only state in the tropics. The state holds a special place in American hearts for its culture, beauty, and balmy weather.

Did you know? The people of Hawaii consume the most Spam of any state – Hormel, the maker of Spam, calls their appetite “unmatched by any place in the world.” Residents also have the longest life expectancy in the U.S.
Are these facts related? We’ll let you decide.

What’s in a name? Hawaii’s largest island – you guessed it, Hawaii – lends the state its name. It is likely derived from the native word for “homeland.”
