On July 14, 1943, the George Washington Carver National Monument was established near Carver’s birthplace of Diamond, Missouri. It was the first national monument dedicated to an African American and non-president and honors Carver’s life and work as an agricultural scientist and inventor. 🥜🥜🥜
Born into slavery near the end of the Civil War, Carver showed an early aptitude for botany, art, music, and math, among other things. Despite poor health and barriers to education, he persevered, eventually earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as several honorary doctorates. Even as a child, he was always pursuing knowledge and kept his own secret garden and collection of plant specimens. 🌱🌾🌷
Did you know? Though best-known for his work with peanuts, Carver also made an incredible impact in developing better farming practices, in particular, crop rotation. These practices directly benefitted poor southern farmers by increasing yields. 🍠🌽🌾
