On December 13, 1818, First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was born in Lexington, Kentucky. The wife of Abraham Lincoln, Mary endured many tragedies in her life. Aside from her husband’s famous assassination and the general stresses of the Civil War, she lost three of her four children at a young age.
Did you know? Mary was an opposite in many ways to her husband – while she came from a wealthy family and was known for her vivacity and outspokenness, he came from a humble background and had a more quiet, introverted demeanor.
The two first met at a dance, where Lincoln approached Mary to say he would like to dance with her “in the worst way.” She later recounted that he did, indeed, dance with her in the worst way. Despite his lack of dancing skills, the two soon began courting.
