November 4 is National Bison Day

November 4, 2023

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 4 of November, repeating indefinitely

The day commemorates our national mammal, the American bison, and raises awareness for its protection and of its near-extinction in years past.

Did you know? Bison are the largest mammal in North America, with males weighing up to an entire ton! Bison have been integral to Native American culture for thousands of years. Aside from their spiritual significance, they provided food, tools, fuel, and shelter.

Thanks to devastating over-hunting and drought, these majestic animals were nearly made extinct in the 1800s. Through conservation efforts, the population has grown to roughly 440,000 animals today.
