National No Beard Day!

October 18, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 18 of October, repeating indefinitely

It’s National No Beard Day!

Did you know? Nearly every U.S. president could celebrate this day – only 5 of our 46 presidents have worn beards, the first being Abraham Lincoln. 11-year-old Grace Bedell famously wrote to him, urging Abe to grow a beard:

“I have got 4 brothers and part of them will vote for you anyway and if you will let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you [–] you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husbands to vote for you and then you would be President.”

Prior to Lincoln, mutton chops occasionally appeared, but beards and mustaches were generally not in fashion. The last president to have any facial hair was William Howard Taft, who sported an impressive mustache.

Abraham Lincoln, candidate for U.S. president, Preston Butler, August 13, 1860 (shortly before he began growing his beard)
