National Lighthouse Day!

August 7, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 7 of August, repeating indefinitely

August 7 is National Lighthouse Day! On that day in 1789, Congress approved a law enacting federal support for the establishment of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers. ⛵️🛥🛳

There are roughly 700 lighthouses in the United States. The first one in the country was established on Little Brewster Island near Boston in 1716. The original tower was destroyed by British forces.

Did you know? The Statue of Liberty was officially a lighthouse upon opening. Lady Liberty’s torch did double-duty, guiding ships into harbor while also serving as a beacon of freedom. 🗽🗽🗽

Thanks to the Great Lakes, Michigan has the most lighthouses in the country.
