On this day – Minnesota became our 32nd State

May 11, 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 11 of May, repeating indefinitely

On May 11, 1858, Minnesota was admitted into the United States as our 32nd state.

Did you know? Minnesota was the first Union state to volunteer troops to fight in the Civil War. Roughly half of Minnesota’s eligible men fought in the war.

Minnesota’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” is no exaggeration. In actuality, the state contains 11,842 lakes and contains more shoreline than any other state aside from Alaska! Thanks to a small protrusion into Canada, it is also the northernmost state of the lower 48.

What’s in a name? Minnesota’s name comes from the Dakota word for the Minnesota River, mnisota, which means “sky-tinted water.”
